Our Shady Live Oak Tree

The beautiful, large Live Oak tree at the clinic entrance has some history to it. It connects us to the heritage of League City. Live Oaks are League City's signature tree, creating a picturesque avenue in the old business district on Main Street. They are a symbol of hospitality in the South and were the favorite tree of Lady Bird Johnson. They also convey a sense of age and establishment to the communities they grow in.
Our large Live Oak at the front enterance was already full grown when the clinic was being built in 1984. Dr. Marcom was very particular that the architect's plans accommodated future growth of this tree. The earth vents in the portico driveway were designed to allow water to get to the roots.
Being a marine community, the Live Oak also connects us to the naval history of our country. It's long strong curved limbs were ideal for shipbuilding. "Old Ironsides", the USS Constitution's hull was made from Live Oak. During a fierce battle with the British in 1812, their cannonballs just bounced off her hull to the amazement of both navy's. The name Ironside stuck, adding to our knowledge that, at times, the Live Oak is as tough as steel.
So the next time you drive by our Old Live Oak at the clinic entrance I hope you feel the connection to the past and the spirit of hospitality we strive to offer our patients.
