Our Shady Live Oak Tree

T hat Oak at the front entrance was there when Drs. Dudney and Davis bought the property back in the 50's. We don't know its age, but it was already grown when the "new" Clinic was being built in 1984. The doctors were very particular that the architect's plans accommodated future growth of this tree. The earth vents in the portico driveway were designed to allow water to get to the roots. There was doubt that the tree would survive the traffic, but it's still hanging in there 28 years later!
The Live Oak also connects us to the naval history of our country. Its long strong curved limbs were ideal for shipbuilding.. For example, the USS Constitution ("Old Ironsides") had a hull made of Live Oak timber. During a fierce battle with the British in 1812, cannonballs just bounced off her hull, to the amazement of both navies. The name "Ironsides" stuck, adding to our belief that, at times, the Live Oak is as tough as iron. By the way, that old battleship still floats proudly in the Navy Yard at Boston Harbor.
So the next time you drive by our Old Live Oak at the clinic entrance we hope you feel the connection to the past and the spirit of hospitality we strive to offer our patients.
